Enka High School’s
Summer Reading 2020
English I, II, III & IV Honors
|
This summer, students entering Honors English I, II, III or IV will read a book and watch the accompanying movie from the list below:
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban- JK Rowling
The Help- Kathryn Stockett
Call of the Wild- Jack London
Gulliver’s Travels- Jonathan Swift
Divergent- Veronica Roth
Ender’s Game- Orson Scott Card
Emma- Jane Austen (accompanying movie could also include Clueless)
Students must choose their books and make sure they have access to their movies. Students will be required to read the book AND watch the movie.
All books are available at local bookstores and Amazon. Students should also check Buncombe County Libraries and Project Gutenberg (for free ebooks for books published before the 1920s.)
For their assessment, students will be required to analyze and explain how the book and the movie deal with literary elements of characterization, point of view, conflict, symbols, and themes. Their essay or assessment will require them to demonstrate their analysis of both the movie and the book. They may bring in any hand-written notes to use during the assessment.
*Students will have an assessment (essay or project) assigned on the second day of the semester they have English.
**AP Language and AP Literature teachers will need to refer to Miss Hooper and Ms. Kendrick’s webpages to get information about pre-course work and the link on the EHS website.
***EHS’s English department will adapt its assignments and expectations as we find out more about how the school will be organized and run for the 2020-2021 school year.
